Olia is a pantry, recipe and nutrition app for iPhone. This policy explains what information Olia collects, what happens to it, and how to get it back or get rid of it.
The short version: your food data is yours. It lives on your device and, if you’re signed in, in your own row of our database that only you can read. We don’t sell it. Using the AI features sends real content to a model provider — pantry item names, your dietary preferences, receipt text, and food photos, depending on the feature — but never your name, email or account identifier.
Who we are
Olia Kitchen is the operator of the Olia app and this website. You can reach us at support@olia.kitchen.
What we collect
Account information. Your email address if you sign in with email, or the identifier Apple gives us if you use Sign in with Apple. Optionally a display name. Every account also has a generated identifier. If you use Sign in with Apple with Hide My Email, we never see your real address.
Your food data. Pantry items, recipes, food logs, leftovers and shopping lists — including any photos you attach. This is the substance of the app.
Goals and metrics. Calorie targets, macro goals, and the daily, weekly and monthly figures calculated from your logs.
Chat conversations. Your threads and messages with the in-app assistant, and the classified intent of each message (for example, “add to pantry” or “plan a meal”).
Diet preferences. Dietary rules, preferences and allergies you enter, used to filter and personalise suggestions.
Usage analytics. Screen views, feature interactions, error events and performance timings. Personal data is filtered out of the event properties before they are sent. If you are signed in, these events are associated with your account identifier, so activity within a session can be understood as belonging to one person — they are pseudonymous rather than anonymous. Your email address and name are not sent. You can turn analytics off entirely in Settings → Privacy.
We do not collect contacts, precise location, or health data from Apple Health.
What happens on your device
Olia is offline-first. Your pantry, recipes, logs and chats are stored locally on your iPhone and work without a network connection.
Receipt scanning reads the text using Apple’s on-device recognition, so the receipt photo itself never leaves your device. The text it extracts does: it is sent to an AI provider to be turned into pantry items. See below.
What we send to AI providers
Recipe generation, nutrition estimation and the chat assistant are powered by third-party AI models. Requests go through our backend rather than directly from your device, so the providers never see your IP address or account identifier.
What gets sent depends on the feature you use:
- Recipes, nutrition estimates and chat — the names of items in your pantry, how much of each you have and what is close to expiring, your nutrition goals, the cooking equipment you have listed, your storage location names, and your dietary preferences, restrictions and allergies as you entered them. These are sent as written rather than summarised, because the model needs the actual terms to avoid suggesting something you can’t eat. Chat also includes recent messages from that conversation.
- Receipt scanning — the full text read from the receipt. That normally includes the shop, the date, and every line and price on it, not only the food items, because the text is sent as recognised and the model picks out what is purchasable. Your storage location names go with it so items can be filed.
- Adding food by photo — a temporary link to the photo you chose, which the AI provider downloads and looks at in order to identify the food in it.
We never send your email address, your name or your account identifier. Requests are not used to train the providers’ models.
Be aware that allergy and dietary information is, by nature, sensitive — and that using these features means sending it to a third-party model provider. If you would rather not, the pantry, recipes, logging and shopping-list features all work without the AI features.
Who else processes your data

Each processes data on our behalf under its own agreement. We don’t sell personal information, and we don’t share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
How long we keep it
Your food data, goals and chats are kept until you delete them or delete your account. Analytics events are kept for 90 days on the server, and the app retains at most 500 recent events locally. Deleted records are tombstoned briefly so the deletion can propagate to your other devices, then removed.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access your data, correct it, export it, restrict or object to processing, and have it deleted. Olia is built so that most of this is available directly in the app; for anything else, email support@olia.kitchen and we’ll respond within 30 days.
If you’re in the EEA or UK, our lawful basis is performance of our contract with you for the core app, and legitimate interests for analytics and abuse prevention. You may turn analytics off at any time in Settings without losing access to the app, and you can choose not to use the AI features, which is what stops your pantry and dietary information being sent to a model provider.
If you’re in California, you have the right to know, delete, correct, and opt out of sale or sharing. We do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of.
Deleting your account
You can request deletion in the app under Profile → Manage Profile, or by emailing support@olia.kitchen with the subject “Account Deletion Request”.
Deleting your account removes your account record and the data associated with it. It does not cancel an active subscription — subscriptions are billed by Apple and must be cancelled in your Apple account. See Support for how.
Children
Olia is not directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy materially, we’ll update the effective date above and, where the change is significant, notify you in the app before it takes effect.
